Casting News of the Day: The Wrap is reporting this morning that 20-year-old Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence, best known for her role as Ree Dolly in Winter’s Bone, has nabbed the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross’s live-action adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling sci-fi series The Hunger Games.
According to The Wrap, Lawrence signed on yesterday after two days of negotiations. She had been the “clear frontrunner” for nearly a week.
Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right), and Hunter Parrish (Weeds) are reportedly being considered for the part of Peeta Mellark.
I HATE EVERYTHING
Physically not really what I had pictured but I loved her in Winter’s Bone so I’m happy to reserve judgement on this one.
So, clearly she doesn’t look like Katniss should look. I mean, she’s blonde. And, my biggest problem with her is her age. She is too old to begin with, and there are three movies to be made.
But, she can act, and since I have seen people suggest Megan Fox and (gasp) Kristen Stewart, this is not a worst case scenario.
Now, as for the three names they are throwing around for Peeta, I have strong opinions. I have never seen any of the three act, so based on pictures alone (and the reviews I have read for I Am Number Four), I am throwing my support behind Hunter Parrish.
The I Am Number Four guy is, by all accounts, awful. Plus, his face bugs me.
Josh Hutcherson…no. Maybe he is a good actor, I haven’t seen his movie yet. But, based on pictures, NO. A thousand times no. Especially with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. Preferable to Alex Pettyfer, but still not good.
Hunter has the right look, and I have heard he is good on Weeds.
Plus, this casting is giving me hope about another aspect of this movie that I was worried about: how sanitized it might be. Jennifer Lawrence is older, and not a lot of teenagers will have seen Winter’s Bone. This casting choice seems to be more adult, so maybe the movie will be allowed to have the same tone as the books. I am seriously worried about how much of it will be dumbed down, so I am choosing to take her casting as a good thing, even with my initial reservations.
I hate this news. She is too old. I now worry that they are going to screw up this movie. Maybe they should read the books first before casting the actors.

Games movie(s). If they do the trilogy, she’ll be in her late 20s when they’re done. Katniss is 16-17 through most
